The University of Florida Diabetes Research Program will be offering free TrialNet study screenings for relatives of people with type 1 diabetes at the JDRF North Florida Chapter Walk to Cure Diabetes on April 10, 2010, beginning at 8:00 am. The test could detect an increased risk for type 1 diabetes up to ten years before symptoms appear. The screening will be offered to relatives -moms, dads, brothers, sisters - who are 1 to 45 years old, and cousins, nieces, nephews who are 1-20 years old. If family members are unable to attend the Walk, they may be screened at a local lab. Please call Elena Hicks, RN, Study Coordinator or Annie Abraham, Recruitment Coordinator at 352-334-0857 or toll free 877-343-2377 for more information.

2010 Walk Junior Ambassador

Emily WilliamsEmily Williams

Hi, I am Emily Williams. I am thirteen years old and can not remember a day that I did not have type 1 diabetes. I was 5 years old when my life and the lives of my family changed forever. Most days my diabetes is something that I just deal with. I am going into the 8th grade this year at Landrum Middle School. Middle school has been a lot different than my earlier years at school; I try not to be “different” at school, but with my diabetes it can be hard. I love being involved with the JDRF, I feel like I am helping to find a cure for my diabetes. Since I have grown up with having to watch what I eat, give myself injections of insulin and feeling bad all the time; I am pretty much use to it all, but I really want to see a cure for all newly diagnose kids I meet at JDRF. I do not want then to have to go through all the stuff I have too! My brother Austin would love for me not to have diabetes as well, then he would be able to eat a lot more junk food and have “slurpees/icees” in front of me. I am very much looking forward to being the Walk Ambassador for the 2010 Walk to Cure Diabetes this year with Mr. Hughes!
